The Magazine
Light, bright and melodic, the cornet playing of Red Nichols typified the white jazz of New York in the 1920s. Many front-rank musicians worked in his band, The Five Pennies. Decades later, a movie biography with that title gave his career an unexpected revival.
The Music
Together with comrades such as Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang and, especially, trombonist Miff Mole, Nichols created some of the most forward-looking jazz of his day, in recordings such as 'Five Pennies', 'Boneyard Shuffle' and 'Davenport Blues'.
