ISSUE 70: KID ORY

The Magazine
For six decades Kid Ory was the leading trombonist in traditional jazz. In the 1920s, he played alongside all the greats, imprinting their music with the spicy Creole flavour of the New Orleans 'tailgate' trombone style. In later years he led his own popular and influential band.

The Music
Ory was a major player in Louis Armstrong's Hot Five, creating immortal recordings such as 'Muskrat Ramble'. He also worked with Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and Johnny Dodds, while his own band sides of the 1940s have sterling work by Mutt Carey and Barney Bigard.
