ISSUE 69: G.I JIVE
The Magazine
Whether playing in service bands or keeping spirits up at home, America's jazzmen and women volunteered their music as a tool of the Allied war effort - although not without a sardonic glance at the racial inequality that even jazz seemed unable to erase.
The Music
Jazz musicians responded to the challenges of World War II by boosting morale with songs such as 'Cash For Your Trash', 'G. I. Stomp', and 'There'll Be A Hot Time In The Town Of Berlin'. The war over, they greeted peace with the sunny optimism of 'Blue Skies' and 'The Freedom Train'.
