ISSUE 61: ROY ELDRIDGE
The Magazine
Eat trumpet, sleep trumpet, drink trumpet - it could have been Roy Eldridge's motto. It was certainly why his fellow musicians called him 'Little Jazz'. Intense, creative, and fiercely competitive, Eldridge was the outstanding jazz trumpeter between Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie.
The Music
As well as leading his own band, Eldridge sparkled in the settings of Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa, Fletcher Henderson, Teddy Wilson and other leaders. His versatility is illustrated in famous recordings such as 'Swing Is Here', 'Rockin' Chair' and 'Shoe Shine Boy'.
