ISSUE 58: BENNY CARTER
The Magazine
Arranger, composer and bandleader, as well as an impeccable performer on clarinet, alto sax and trumpet, Benny Carter was one of the truly versatile men of jazz. His career spanned eight decades, from the 1920s until his retirement from performing in 1997.
The Music
Carter's prodigal talents are displayed at length in recordings with McKinney's Cotton Pickers, the Chocolate Dandies, Lionel Hampton, Lucky Thompson and Fats Waller, as well as gorgeous ballards and hot stomps recorded with his own orchestras.
