ISSUE 48: MONK & POWELL
The Magazine
Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell were the first two masters of be-bop piano, admired and absorbed by generations of musicians. Monk also composed such modern jazz standards as 'Epistrophy', 'Well You Needn't' and the haunting ''Round Midnight'.
The Music
In a fascinating survey of their early work, Monk and Powell introduce their own compositions, lead their own groups and play sideman to other leaders such as Dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt.
