ISSUE 44: MILDRED BAILEY
The Magazine
Miildred Bailey's exquisite voice and sense of rhythm coloured her music with a gaiety that belied her troubled private life. In the 1930s and 1940s she and her husband, the bandleader and xylophonist Red Norvo, were one of the first families of jazz - 'Mr & Mrs Swing'.
The Music
No one caught the spirit of American popular songs more vivaciously than Mildred Bailey. Her records, made with leaders such as Benny Goodman and the Dorseys, feature gorgeous miniatures such as 'Thanks For The Memory' and the sparkling 'Week-End Of A Private Secretary'.
