ISSUE 43: EARL HINES

The Magazine
For half a century Earl Hines was one of the great men of jazz piano - innovative, technically brilliant, versatile yet always recognizable. Between partnerships with Louis Armstrong and sympathetic ventures into be-bop, he led one of the most popular swing orchestras of the 1930s.

The Music
Although a remarkable soloist - listen to 'Rosetta' or 'Body And Soul' - Hines was above all a collaborator, as he proves in classic recordings with Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet. Hear him, too, steering his band in 'Grand Terrace Shuffle' and his signature tune 'Deep Forest'.
