ISSUE 41: THE DUKE'S MEN

The Magazine
As well as working for the most famous orchestra in the business, Duke Ellington's star musicians launched themselves on record in their own names, often heading bands composed of fellow Ellingtonians. They made some of the most individual jazz of the 1930s and 1940s.

The Music
Hear the lyrical soprano of Johnny Hodges, the dusky clarinet of Barney Bigard and the growls and crescendos of trumpeters Rex Stewart and Cootie Williams on immortal performances such as 'Jeep's Blues', ''Round Midnight', 'Rose Room' and 'Things Ain't What They Used To Be'.
