ISSUE 40: RED ALLEN

The Magazine
Some of the most flamboyant trumpet-playing in jazz has been the work of Henry 'Red' Allen. In his youth a student of Louis Armstrong, he developed into a leading hot trumpeter with the orchestras of Luis Russell and Fletcher Henderson before heading his own bands.

The Music
More than 15 years of Allen's work are charted, from the big-band settings of 'Louisiana Swing', 'Roamin'' and 'Sweet Sorrow Blues' to the exuberant small-group music of 'There's A Kitchen Up In Heaven' and 'I Was Born To Swing', often with Allen's distinctive singing.
