ISSUE 32: ART TATUM

The Magazine
When Art Tatum sat down at the piano, fellow musicians and fans in the know would nudge each other excitedly and whisper 'God is in the house'. A prodigiously gifted player, he was also the most creative, imaginative and prolific improviser of his time.

The Music
Alongside Tatum's versions of standards like 'I Got Rhythm', 'Sweet Lorraine' and 'Honeysuckle Rose', hear his wonderful touch on blues with Joe Turner and Barney Bigard. As well as his solo, trio and band sides, Tatum plays in group settings with Coleman Hawkins and Frankie Newton.
