ISSUE 31: FLETCHER HENDERSON

The Magazine
With Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington as technical consultants, big-band jazz underwent a makeover in the 1920s. First as an arranger, then as a composer, Henderson refashioned the jazz orchestra, paying attention to overall form no less than to details and highlights.

The Music
Helped by a team of dedicated stylists that included Coleman Hawkings, Tommy Ladnier, Chu Berry and Ben Webster, Henderson demonstrated his theories throughout the 1920s and 1930s in superb big-band recordings that enriched the tonal palette of jazz.
