ISSUE 23: BOOGIE-WOOGIE

The Magazine
The rolling, eight-to-the-bar rhythms of boogie-woogie have enlivened jazz for 70 years. Originally pounded out on pianos in bars, barrelhouses and brothels, in the 1930s and 1940s they inspired a worldwide craze for boogie-woogie songs and band tunes.

The Music
Trace the music's lineage from the pioneering Pine Top Smith and Montana Taylor to the famous boogie-woogie piano trio of Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade 'Lux' Lewis, through classics such as 'Honky Tonk Train Blues', 'Roll 'Em Pete', 'Yancey Stomp' and 'Dive Bomber'.
