ISSUE 21: COLEMAN HAWKINS
The Magazine
The tenor saxophone was a joke in jazz until he came along, but Coleman Hawkins gave it standing, substance and style - so much so that, for many people, the tenor is the most expressive of all jazz voices. 'The Hawk' weathered every climate change in jazz, from dancebands to be-bop.
The Music
Hawkins's masterpieces are scattered across decades of record-making, whether in the big band of Fletcher Henderson or a small group with Django Reinhardt. Follow 'The Hawk's' flight from the exuberant 'Jamaica Shout' to the rhapsodic 'Body and Soul' and 'Donegal Cradle Song'.
