ISSUE 12: CAB CALLOWAY
The Magazine
Cab Calloway led one of the hottest bands of the swing era but is best known for his eccentric showmanship and scat singing. He became one of the Cotton Club's leading attractions and, in the late 1930s, with his zoot suit and surreal jive talk, the leading 'hipster' of his day.
The Music
Cab Calloway's voice brings his personality to life at every hearing. His huge range, from high tenor to low baritone, made him an inimitable artist. His band contained such great musicians as Milt Hinton and Dizzy Gillespie. Listen out for 'Minnie The Moocher' and 'The Jumpin' Jive'.
